Bringing Houseplants Outside for the Summer

April 6, 2021 by fifthseason 1 Comment

Moving tropical plants outside for the summer.

-Pam Scott- Chances are that most of the plants you keep indoors during the winter are tropical or semi tropical plants. As temperatures warm up and the days get longer, it makes sense to want to bring your beloved plant friends outdoors to enjoy the extra light and humidity that spring and summer have to offer. Many tropical plants will suffer as indoor air conditioning draws all of the humidity from the house, drying out leaves and soil. Mounting a Staghorn Fern

September 8, 2020 by fifthseason 12 Comments

-Pam Scott- Of all the beautiful tropical houseplants we offer at Fifth Season Gardening, I find the Staghorn Fern (Platycerium) to be the most strikingly dramatic. Tillandsia will pretty much grow onto anything their seedpods can land on. They are commonly seen growing on trees, rock walls, … [Read more...] about Magical, Marvelous Air Plants

Houseplant Care Series Pt. 3: Basic Soil Choices

November 4, 2014 by fifthseason 1 Comment

Plants have adapted to wildly different environments and, to some extent, you should endeavor to mimic their native soil when deciding what mixture to use. You can also alter a soil mixture depending on where you plan to grow it and to better suit your watering routine. It's often a daunting task to look at the myriad number of soils and choose the right one for your particular houseplant. To get started, there are a few basic questions to ask yourself: What type of plant are you … [Read more...] about Houseplant Care Series Pt. 3: Basic Soil Choices
