We carry a wide range of soils at our Fifth Season locations, and we know it can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming to select a soil that’s right for your particular growing situation. It may seem like dirt, is dirt, is dirt, but the truth is that different plants have different needs, and even the same plants have different needs depending on where they are in their growth cycle. While we are always happy to talk with you in person, we thought it might be helpful to have a rundown of some of our most popular bagged soil options.
McEnroe Premium Lite Growing Mix: OMRI Listed. Light, fluffy soil ideal for starting seeds and use in container gardening. Developed in response to the needs of organic growers, McEnroe’s Lite Growing Mix begins with compost, peat moss, and horticulture perlite instead of sand. It has the same aeration, drainage, and water retention as their potting soil, but is less nutrient-dense, which makes it better for seed-starting and propagation.
FoxFarm Light Warrior Seed Starter: Fast-draining, lightweight medium designed for seed-starting and propagation. Contains mycorrhizae to stimulate root growth and enhance nutrient uptake, humic acid to help in seed germination, and earthworm castings to help young plants thrive without worrying about over-fertilization.
Sunshine Natural and Organic Planting Mix: OMRI Listed. Lighter mix appropriate for seed-starting and propagation, outdoor containers, houseplants and amending raised beds. Contains Canadian Sphagnum peat moss, perlite, organic fertilizer, and organic wetting agent for moisture retention.
McEnroe Premium Organic Potting Soil: OMRI Listed. Ideal for soil blocks, potting up seedlings, transplanting, and amending garden beds. Beginning with McEnroe’s Premium Organic Compost, sustainably harvested Sphagnum peat moss, and sand to facilitate drainage, McEnroe’s Organic Potting Soil is fortified with quick-releasing, organic nutrients and minerals to create an ideal rooting environment for developing plants.
FoxFarm Happy Frog Potting Soil is a go-to for many growers because of its wide range of uses and balanced fertilizing. Whether you are using this blend for your veggie garden, container plantings, or transplanting some house plants, Happy Frog does not disappoint. The blend of organic inputs (including earthworm castings, bat guano, and aged forest products), mycorrhizae, and beneficial soil microbes make a sweet growing environment for any plant. Great for container plantings of all types, indoors and outside.
FoxFarm Ocean Forest: A powerhouse blend of aged forest products, Sphagnum peat moss, earthworm castings, bat guano, fish emulsion and crab meal. The high concentration of nutrients packed into this mix means that you won’t have to add fertilizer to your plants for awhile after planting. It also means that this soil is better for established plants, rather than tender young seedlings. Awesome for amending beds, perennial and annuals, indoor and outdoor containers.
FoxFarm Bush Doctor Coco Loco Potting Mix is a coconut coir blend which provides exceptional water retention. This means plants growing in Coco Loco will not require watering as often as plants in a usual potting mix. Earthworm castings, calcium, and mycorrhizae feed your plants and aid in nutrient uptake. This blend is a great option for hanging baskets and outside containers, because of its water retention.
Roots Organics Original Potting Soil: This soil blend is a ready-to-use mix with a balanced air-to-water ratio to allow for frequent feeding of fast-growing, heavy-feeding plants. Contains perlite, coco fiber, peat moss, composted forest material, pumice, worm castings, bat guano, soybean meal, alfalfa meal, fish bone meal, kelp meal, and greensand. As an added bonus, the Roots Camo Bag is designed as a grow bag. Just cut off the top of the bag, plant your tomato right in the soil and you’re good to go!
Organic Mechanics Container Blend Potting Soil: OMRI Listed. All-purpose, organic potting soil perfect for repotting houseplants, fast-growing annuals, outdoor containers, perennials, and herbs. This soil blend does not contain peat moss or perlite. They use coco fiber, pine bark, organic rice hulls, compost, and a good amount of earthworm castings for a good balance of water retention, drainage, and nutrition for your plants.

Can you mix Ocean Forest Potting Soil with compost and peat moss? I live in the high deserts of Southern California (triple digits in summer). This is my 4th year of of growing outdoor marijuana (2 good grows/1 bad grow). I am prepping my soil this year using top soil, peat moss, compost, and Ocean Forest Potting Soil if recommended. I have also purchased 1 Gallon Jugs of a 3-Pack Baby Daddy Gallons Foxfarm TRIO – Tiger Bloom + Big Bloom + Grow Big to use throughout the growing life cycle of my plants. Currently my grow this year will be 8 plants in the ground. The home of each plant is 24″ depth and about 12-16 ” circumference. Any suggestions you may have that would assist me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Bob,
We can’t advise you on marijuana growing, as we are here in NC, but we can advise you on growing hemp. And we would say that you absolutely can mix the Ocean forest with compost and peat moss. It wouldn’t hurt to blend in some of Fox Farm Fruit and Flower in there with this blend, with it being out doors. The plants will eat up those nutrients really fast with higher temps. Best of luck with this grow! — Ryan
