Spring is right around the corner, and what does that mean? The joy of planning your outdoor garden! But what if you don’t have a raised bed or the time to make one? Well, why not start a container garden? They are fast and easy to set up anywhere. You can have all the fun of gardening without needing a dedicated space that is permanently set up for one. Here at Fifth Season Gardening Co. we have everything you need to have a bountiful, easy-to-manage container garden! Let’s take a look at some container options, as well as some tips for larger harvests!
First things first, when I think of container gardens I think of Smart Pots. Smart Pots are fabric containers that allow for maximum aeration and drainage. The design of the fabric containers causes roots to be air-pruned, meaning you don’t have to worry about a plant getting pot bound and fizzling out on you early in the season. When the root tips hit the bottom or sides of the fabric pot, it stops the root from growing further which prompts the plant to send out new roots into the soil. All said, it allows for large healthy root mass and ultimately larger harvests!
Smart Pot makes containers in a variety of shapes and sizes. They make a standard round fabric pot from 1 gallon all the way up to 1000 gallons! I love growing a cherry tomato in a 15-gallon smart pot. It gives me great yields with a healthy plant! They also make the Big Bag Beds. This is a large fabric container that is a roll-out raised bed. That’s right, you can have your very own raised bed in less than 10 minutes. Just roll it out and fill it up with some high quality organic soil! I personally love a blend of Fox Farm’s Happy Frog & Ocean Forest! Lastly, Smart pot just released their Big Bag Raised Beds. These are awesome and come in 3 sizes: 6ft, 8ft, and 12ft long and just over a 1ft wide. Whatever Smart Pot container you choose you will be sure to love it!
The next product I think of when I think of container gardening is The Original Earth Box. The Earth Box is a passive self-watering planting container. It has a built-in reservoir that, when kept full, will bottom-water your plants for you! The durable, food-safe, UV-stabilized plastic will last for years, and Earthboxes are made in the USA.
The Earth Box comes with an organic nutrient packet that you blend with your favorite peat-based potting soil, giving your plants the nutrients they need to flourish over the season. Using the Earth Box takes all the guesswork out of growing healthy plants! Never again should you worry that you are under or over watering your plants – just keep the reservoir full and the Earth Box will take care of the rest! To show you just how easy it is to set up an Earth Box, here’s a video of one of our Fifth Season crew planting one up.
Container gardening is great for all kinds of situations: if you are renting your place; if you live in an apartment or condo with no yard; if the sunniest spot in your yard is on your deck or patio; if you want to deter deer from browsing your produce; or if you simply want more harvest in less space. Stop on by and we can get you set up with the items and info you need to get started!
