Fifth Season Carrboro Outdoor Classroom
Registration: $20*
The Fifth Season Kegging Class will start out by covering the fundamentals of kegging and setting up your draft system. We will discuss the various and sundry items needed to build a draft system, how they all work together, and what the best practices are. Then we’ll take attendants through the process of cleaning a keg, purging a keg with Co2, and racking your fresh brew into a keg for the first time. Once we’ve covered all of the bases needed to start serving draft then we will discuss some more intermediate techniques and some hacks that will take your kegging system to the next level.
About the Instructors
Ryan Burton splits his working time between a day job as an Environmental Scientist working for The National Institutes of Health and helping out homebrew customers at Fifth Season Gardening Co. in Carrboro on the weekends. His love for stainless steel, cooking, and DIY converge to fuel his addiction to home brewing beer. His inner scientist is constantly experimenting with ingredients and techniques on his home-brews. Ryan’s other interests include fishing, home renovations, and tending to a small hop farm.
Ethan Johnston’s curiosity about craft beer began when he was 17 and hasn’t stopped since. A North Carolina native, his first batch of beer was made a few years later and he’s brewed around 100 batches on his own since then. Working at Fifth Season Gardening Co. in Carrboro has been a very symbiotic relationship, as he brews around 50% of his beer at work and 50% at home. He also plays a key role in Homebrew For Hunger, an annual educational event for the public to learn about and taste craft beers while supporting a local hunger fighting organization. Ethan’s personal brewing favorites include artisanal, wild, saison and sour beers, which work with naturally occurring microorganisms instead of solely brewer’s yeast. When he’s not drinking or brewing beer, he can often be found tending to his other DIY projects (yogurt, plants) or enjoying time outside playing disc golf.
