Fifth Season Gardening carries various equipment and ingredients for the home hobbyist cheese maker. We have all inclusive ingredient kits for mozzarella, hard cheeses and chevre. If you prefer to dabble and experiment on your own, we stock literature and recipe books as well as rennets, lipase and over a dozen cultures including mesophilic, thermophilic, 3 types of yogurt, kefir, fromage blanc and more. If you are interested in making hard cheeses we stock a press, forming molds, reed mats and several colors of wax. Making cheese at home is incredibly easy. Try it!
Have extra wine or beer or ever wonder what it would be like to make your own vinegar? Expanding on our Urban DIY selection we stock red wine, white wine and malt vinegar mothers. Our vinegar mothers are locally sourced from Virginia Vinegar Works. Homemade vinegar is very simple to make and takes anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months of aging to be ready for consumption. Enjoy!
Fifth Season is now stocking kombucha scobys locally sourced from Farmstead Ferments out of Charlottesville, VA. This reusable culture of bacteria and yeast allows you to turn your sweetened herbal teas into a flavorful, probiotic treat!
We carry a full line of canning jars and supplies to preserve your garden’s summer bounty. We have Ball jars varying in size from 4 oz to 64 oz. We also carry 1 gallon widemouth “pickle jar”-style containers, and several sizes of sauce bottles. We also now stock wire bail (swing top) glass jars from 500mL to 5L in size. To compliment our selection of glass jars we carry canning racks, canning pots, lifters, funnels, labels, mineral-rich Himalayan Pink Salt and more.
Have you ever tried fermenting your own food? The newest addition to our Urban DIY products are food fermentation jars. The process of pickling with vinegar destroys the nutritional content of your fruits and vegetables. By undergoing fermentation, your food retains it’s nutritional content and also gains probiotic benefits. Our jars come as bundled kits complete with directions, recipes, airlocks, and stoppers. We use only air-tight wire bail jars for optimal anaerobic conditions, making them the ideal fermentation container. Make your own soured/fermented kraut, kimchi, garlic, beets and the list goes on. If you can eat it, you can ferment it!
