Join Meagan Roberts, and members of her flock, as they provide a hands-on introduction to the care, handling and housing of backyard heritage poultry. This course will provide the information and confidence you need to raise healthy, productive birds in your own backyard.
Topics will include: breed selection, basic chick and poultry care, handling birds, health management, housing, feed options and an introduction to egg and meat production.
About the instructor: Meagan is the Sustainable Agriculture instructor at Western Piedmont Community College in Morganton, NC. She also owns and operates Upper Yadkin Heritage Poultry in Lenoir, NC.

Chicks, ducklings, goslings or poults need very specific care for a successful beginning. In this workshop, we will cover how to prepare for your chicks, essential care in their first weeks of life, nutrition and trouble shooting. This course is essential for beginners and experienced producers alike.

We are collaborating with Fifth Season Garden Co. for a fun, Spring-inspired event. With tickets, participants will get a garden kit, complete with everything they need for a small container garden and a token for a delicious beer. Fifth Season will provide a demo on how to put together your container garden and care instructions to ensure a long and fruitful life. Fermenting to Reduce Food Waste in the Garden & Homestead • $40 • Register

Want to learn how to plan a garden with the intention of fermenting from it? This course is designed to introduce you to the basic principles of vegetable fermenting for the home as well as problem solving techniques to get creative with fermenting. We will cover the two basic types of vegetable fermentation, self-brinning (kraut and kimchi) and brined (pickles). You will walk away with a secure base in the general application of fermentation, basic uses in your daily life and the understanding to cut your food waste, reduce food budget and increase your nutritional value. Class is supplemented with a make and take hands on experience and is offered with continual technical support through email.
Bonsai 101 with Danny Coffey • $80 • Register

Curious about exploring the art of bonsai but not sure how to start? Perfect for beginners, this class will increase your confidence with bonsai and provide an opportunity for hands-on learning with a tree of your own to take home!
This two hour class begins with an art and cultural history tour of bonsai. Participants will then learn how to wire and repot their tree as well as bending techniques. The class concludes with a discussion about plant care, pest prevention, treatments, and winter protection.
