Fall opening planned for community-oriented store focusing on Hydroponics, Organic Gardening, Homebrew and D.I.Y. Supplies
Fifth Season Gardening Co. will open its second Asheville location this fall in the Asheville Market shopping center on South Tunnel Road, near the new Whole Foods Market. Fifth Season specializes in hydroponics, organic gardening, beer- and wine-making supplies, and products and expertise for customers who take a do-it-yourself approach to life.
Fifth Season has been a part of the Asheville community for over fifteen years. The family-owned business opened in 1999 and still operates out of its first location at 45 Banks Ave. in Downtown Asheville. The company has since grown to include stores in Carrboro, Greensboro, Raleigh and Charlottesville, VA, with warehouses in West Asheville and outside of Chapel Hill.
The Asheville Market store will be a long-overdue extension of Fifth Season’s original location, offering a community-oriented experience with a dedicated classroom, beer on tap, coffee, and space available for local groups to meet. Longtime Banks Ave. manager Mike Weeks and his wife Kirstin will be partners in the new store, and will serve an integral role in its development, while continuing to operate the original store.
“We’re excited to expand our products and reach in Asheville with the new Asheville Market store,” says Weeks. “The nursery, classroom and expanded floor space will allow us to introduce products and to educate/demonstrate how to grow, brew and make your own in a variety of ways. It will also provide maximum flexibility to our retail and wholesale customers, who can shop and pick up supplies downtown, at our West Asheville warehouse, or at the Tunnel Road store.”
The new Asheville store will boast 12,000 square feet of retail and events space, as well as a 3,600 square foot outdoor nursery. It will feature the following products:
- Hydroponics: lighting, hydroponic systems, nutrients and more for indoor growing
- Organic Gardening: organic seeds and plant starts seasonally, with organic soils, fertilizers and pest control year-round
- Nursery: perennials, annuals and house plants, with a focus on rare and unusual varieties including natives, edibles, tropicals, and carnivorous plants
- Beer & Wine Making Supplies: kits and supplies for homebrewers and wine makers, including fresh hops, yeasts, and grains, with workshops and demos to teach brewers at all levels
- For The Home: home décor, ceramic pots, gifts
- For the Garden: heirloom-quality tools, container gardening, garden art
- Wholesale: supplying organic soils and fertilizers in bulk to local farms
“Our Asheville Market store takes the expansion of the Fifth Season concept we’ve introduced in Carrboro and Charlottesville to a whole new level,” says Fifth Season owner Richard Quinn. “With beer on tap, coffee service, and classroom/community space, we really want Fifth Season to be a lifestyle destination… a place to learn, to support sustainable practices like gardening and brewing, and to enjoy yourself. It’s fitting that we do this store in Asheville, where it all started for Fifth Season in 1999.”
The new Fifth Season Gardening store will open in fall 2015 in the Asheville Market, located at 4 S. Tunnel Road. The shopping center is owned and operated by EDENS and features a number of popular retailers including Whole Foods Market, Neo Burrito, CityMac, Guitar Center Asheville, Elementality and more.
“This latest opening strengthens our commitment to adding local and regional stores to the national retail here in the Tunnel Road area,” explains Lyle Darnall, Managing Director for EDENS. “Fifth Season is the essence of Asheville and we couldn’t be happier that they’re bringing that to Asheville Market.”
